Vintage "Inden" Wallet

$125.00

An exceptional wallet, possibly from late 19th century Japan. The outside is deer skin painted with lacquer, a widely popular craft since that time called “Inden.”  It has the distinctive "shobu" design, inspired by the shobu or sweet flag plant with blades of grass that resemble swords.  “Shobu” can also mean "victory or defeat,” or “martial spirit,” therefore the design was often found on armors of samurai warriors. The liner is made of golden silk textile with intricate woven patterns.

The wallet has three pockets with ivory closures. Excellent vintage condition, still usable.
