BYOD -- Bring Your Own Dyeable

In this workshop we guide you to dip your own garments in beautiful blue and give them new lives.
You will learn basic shibori (tie-dye) and itajime (wood-clamping) pattern making on garments and how to dye them in Yamato Indigo, a natural-blend indigo dye from Japan.
Bring 4 pieces (or up to 800g) of cotton, linen or silk garments, home linens or fabrics. Additional weight is $0.15 per gram. No wool or synthetic material please.

Guidelines for what you may bring within the 800g limit:
Weight of garment depends largely on thickness of fabric and size.
Hanes T-shirts, size medium: 112g
Left Field Tube T, size small: 153g
Long sleeve shirts with medium weight cotton in women’s small: 215g
Levis 505 Vintage Jeans, size L30, W30: 668g

For best dyeing outcomes:
Used, vintage garments generally dye better. Pre-washing is recommended for brand-new items. For never-washed canvas, be sure to boil the items for 15 to 20 minutes, rinse well and dry before class.
Thinner fabrics are better suited for creating intricate shibori patterns. You can bring poly or nylon-mixed cotton items but it may dye lighter.  Rayon and tercel can be dyed. Note: 100% poly or nylon or wool cannot be dyed in this class.
If you are unsure about what to dye, bring several options. We will consider them together and select the best items to dye.
You will go home with freshly dyed, wet garments (plastic bags are available). We will give you 100ml of Yamato Indigo Dye Fixative and instructions for post-dye treatment at home.
