Matsubishi Fabric

This exceptional fabric features the Matsubishi pattern, dyed in a vibrant green hue. Inspired by the cracks in pine tree bark, Matsubishi was a popular motif in late 16th-century Japan, often appearing in Noh costume embroidery, Makie lacquerware and Fusuma screen door. The design, a variation of the diamond motif (Hishimon), creates a striking nested pattern with smaller diamonds offset above and below.
Possibly hand-drawn and dyed using the Tsutsugaki technique, this fabric showcases the unparalleled craftsmanship of traditional Japanese textiles.
