Mud-Dye Shibori Room Shoes

These lightweight room shoes in shades of earthy brown are crafted using Amami Oshima’s traditional mud-dyeing technique, with a touch of square shibori patterns. Made by Hajime Shoji and led by eighth-generation artisan Tadaaki Hajime, they embody the time-honored art of Oshima tsumugi.

The dyeing process involves first using sharinbai (テーチ木), a plant that imparts a rich brown tone, followed by repeated immersion in the island’s iron-rich mud, creating deep, natural shades. The shibori technique adds a subtle geometric pattern to the design, giving the fabric a unique texture. These room shoes are both a nod to tradition and a cozy, elegant addition to any home, providing warmth and comfort with every step.
