Mud-Dye Shibori Shawl
$1,150.00
This lightweight shawl in rich shades of brown features intricate square shibori patterns, showcasing the exceptional mud-dyeing technique of Amami Oshima. Crafted by Hajime Shoji under the guidance of eighth-generation artisan Tadaaki Hajime, the piece is steeped in the island’s centuries-old traditions.
The dyeing process begins with sharinbai (テーチ木), a local plant that infuses the fabric with a deep tannin-rich hue. The material is then repeatedly dipped into Amami Oshima’s iron-rich mud, resulting in complex, earthy tones unique to this region. The addition of shibori adds depth and texture, making this shawl a blend of nature and refined craftsmanship. It offers a sophisticated yet natural touch to any ensemble, perfect for those who appreciate traditional artistry and modern elegance.
