Tetsuji—literally “iron ground”—is a lacquerware technique that recreates the color and texture of cast iron. MEGURU achieves this by mixing urushi lacquer with diatomaceous earth, producing a robust, matte coating with the dark, grounded character of ironwork.

Made in the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, this plate draws on a lacquer tradition known for both its durability and its range of expression. The tetsuji finish pairs the visual weight of iron with the lightness and warmth of wood—a contrast that is distinctive and tactile.

Designed for serving, it also works as a tray or display surface. Like all urushi, the finish strengthens and develops nuance over time.
